Please help…. When I install nvidia driver on my laptop, GeForce GT M is shown under display adapters of device manager in windows 7. Otherwise, standard vga graphics adapter is shown. Or does it mean that the computer is configured to use nvidia graphic card, but with some standard driver instead of nvidia proprietary driver? You should be able to choose either Driver via the Device Manager, if you do not have the nvidia driver then the system would use the default graphics driver — are you having problems selecting the nvidia one?

Hi Thanks for responding. My actual problem is that my laptop lenovo ideapad y graphic card nvidia failed and needs reballing.

So I wondered whether it could be bypassed on the motherboard and use integrated graphics instead. But, after searching online yesterday, I realised that my processor core 2 duo does not have integrated graphics.

Does this mean that in my laptop, graphic card is the only chip that can handle graphics and there are two drivers one can choose from- one standard and one nvidia proprietary. Till yesterday, I thought that standard vga graphics adapter is a driver that can only configure integrated graphics and has nothing to do with nvidia card.

Now it seems that the standard driver can also be used to configure nvidia card. Am I correct? I am not given two options in device manager — if i install nvidia driver, geforce gt m appears, otherwise standard vga graphics adapter appears. I would take a backup of Drivers etc. This will force your system to use any backup integrated graphics if available — hope this helps and let us know how it goes!

Hey guys — been having problem booting up laptop…it gets to desktop home screen win7 HE then everything hangs…. However, the display obviously isnt as good as before. The standard driver is dated — is there an updated vga graphs driver that will allow diff screen resolutions to get it close to normal again. Ive tried to reinstall and update the intel drivers, but the above problem keeps reoccurring…im assuming the graphics card is cactus!

Hi Gordo — what are the specs of your laptop? There should be an update available but would need more details on the model etc.
