The IntelliPoint software is where the power of the X8 comes into play. The default settings are , and DPI. When precision is needed such as when using graphics programs, then the lower DPI setting is useful, while the DPI is for games where lightning responses provide the edge between life and having to respawn.
Microsoft provides three sets of mouse feet — one grey, one black and one white; each has its own glide characteristics. My personal preference was the white set of mouse feet as I felt they had the slickest surface when combined with a gaming mouse pad. The Microsoft BlueTrack system works wonderfully, I was able to use the mouse on the glass surface of my desktop as easily as on the mouse pad.
As opposed to the red light of a laser and optical mouse, the BlueTrack uses, well….. This combined with the wider aperture of the optics opening gives the X8 a much improved tracking capability.
The Sidewinder X8 is a fairly large sized mouse and fits comfortably in larger hands. Its size may present a problem to folks with smaller hands and left-handed users. Since the contours and ridges are designed for use with the right hand, it may difficult for a lefty to embrace using the Sidewinder X8. The X8 has an ergonomic form factor but definitely does not feel as organic in ones hands as the Logitech Revolution MX or the G5.
The angles on the Sidewinder make it feel a little boxy. The scroll wheel is composed of textured metal and does need fine tuning in the IntelliPoint software to provide a smooth scroll experience I was used to with my Logitech mice.
The tilt feature of the wheel is nice and a new feature for the Sidewinder line; although it is not unique to other popular mice on the market. There are twelve buttons on the X8 and seven are programmable using the IntelliPoint software. The tilt, wheel button, two main buttons, and two side buttons are the programmable ones with the macro record button in front of the forward and back vertical buttons. This button lets macros to be recorded while in mid game, keeping you in the action with some added tricks up your proverbial sleeve.
If you play games where you need to watch behind you, I highly recommend the Quick Turn command. The silver button with the Sidewinder logo can be used in conjunction with Vista to launch the Games Explorer. In terms of gameplay, since the X8 provides a DPI setting, there is a learning curve in getting used to the responsiveness of the mouse. At this speed the mouse was smooth and responsive but allowed me to react more quickly and accurately that I have in the past. While using a sniper weapon, ratcheting down the DPI is definitely advised.
The wireless mouse performed as well as its wired competitor when they were working at the same DPI. The Microsoft Sidewinder X8 is the best gaming mouse from the folks at Redmond. They have created a mouse with an excellent set of features, which includes their tracks on almost anything BlueTrack technology, and the charge and play cable, keeping you in the game even when you run out of juice in your mouse.
Left and right main buttons also excellent feel. Quality and function as a gaming mouse way above what I've used before Logitech but I've never used their or any other 'gaming' mice. Choice of 3 feet materials, excellent storage for weights and feet, Macro capable. Cons: Feet maybe too big and cause more stiction on my worn-down Razer Exactmat which wears out feet very fast? Quick Turn is a great idea and mostly works but you have to hold down the right button AND the button you have Quick Turn assigned to, which is awkward, and depending on what's under the pointer, it doesn't always work.
You NEED it to work quickly when you use it, so it is pretty much useless 'cause you can't count on it. Overall Review: Get rid of Intellipoint! Well, it's not that bad, you can adjust lots of things but isn't exactly tailored to this mouse. I just have the feeling I'm using a 1-size fits all product, which is not what I want when using such a great tool.
If you hold this mouse in a 'lazy' position, like with your wrist laying down on the desk, it may not fit your hand. A 'claw' position, or modified claw, works much better. Hand position is everything to the feel of this mouse, if you will adapt to it it will be a pleasure, if you insist that it feel like your other mice it might not work for you.
Pros: Buttons have nice feel without being too "clicky". Metal scroll wheel has good motion and great feedback. Added weights are a nice touch. On-the-fly resolution change will come in handy for sniping and such. Quality seems good. Cons: I have large hands and I bought this mouse specifically due to folks talking about how large this mouse is. It is not large at all - just shaped differently. I was hoping to find a mouse that I could wrap my hand around. If I do that with this mouse, my fingers extend past the buttons slightly which I can deal with.
My major gripe is that the scroll wheel is half-way up my middle finger and nowhere near the tip, making it unusable. So I end up using this mouse just like any other, by holding it between my thumb and pinky so that my fingers can access the buttons and scroll wheel. I wish somebody would manufacture a mouse for people with large hands. Pros: this thing is a beast. This monster is huge. This is not a mouse.
Pros: Come of age with the current microsoft mouse driver. Enables you to change any of the 3 dpi settings to whatever you like.
Fits "my" hand well. Side buttons are fairly easy to reach. The "one touch" button to access mouse properties is a nice and handy feature. Interchangeable mouse feet and weigts are excellent add ons for customizing. Cons: None for me, but may be to large for some hands. I would say if you wear a small size glove this mouse will be to large for you access the side buttons.
But, if your normal mouse grip is high on the mouse you might be ok. I grip a mouse with the back of my palm "near my wrist" resting on the mousepad.
I wear a medium glove. Overall Review: I bought this mouse because in gaming I needed the extra side button. I have the early Logitech G5 "single side button". The G5 is an overall smaller mouse. Weight design is good for both. MS has 2 sets of extra feet for when the first ones wear out. The MS weighted cord keeper is nice plus holds all your extra feet and weights. MS moves smoother on the mouse pad. MS scroll wheel is wide and the downward motion is much more pronounced and positive.
G5 scroll wheel has side scroll, MS does not. After using the logitechs all my computer life and using the Sidewinder for months I can honestly say at the moment IMO the Sidewinder is the better mouse. Both are excellent. Someday I might try one of the RAzers. Pros: The Microsoft Sidewinder is a good gaming mouse.
Other mice, whether the side buttons are on opposite sides or just one side for using your thumb, don't give you good use of these accessory buttons. When in a hurry or quickly clicking you can easily hit the wrong side button, or miss the button completely. I haven't had an issue with the mouse pointer "sticking" as another reviewer had, usually things like that are caused by a poor surface the mouse is used on rather than the mouse itself.
